Ideology Why Defeating ISIS with Military Might is Starry-Eyed Idealism

Iraqi government forces rest after they claimed they have gained complete control of the Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, on January 26, 2015 near the town of Muqdadiyah. Iraqi forces have 'liberated' Diyala province from the Islamic State jihadist group, retaking all populated areas of the eastern region, a top army officer said. A steady stream of political statements offering answers to “what do we do about them?” have gotten progressively more hawkish. Would-be presidents have given us options ranging from bombing ISIS “back to the seventh century” (Rick Santorum), increasing the number of American troops in the fight (Lindsey Graham), and “look for them, find them and kill them” (Marco Rubio, quoting an action movie). Bold words—and every one of them will fail, because they are far too idealistic to

This Week in Space: More Bad News for Mars

Image
It was a busy week for space news, thanks to the annual meeting of the Division of Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society. Planetary scientists no doubt wore out the “Let It Go” selection on the karaoke machine, but only after dropping some exciting new knowledge about our solar system. Pluto’s ice volcanoes As the New Horizons probe continues to download the massive cache of data it captured as it flew past Pluto, the discoveries just keep on coming . This week, scientists released 3D maps of Pluto’s surface, including two mountains with shapes that are strikingly familiar. “These are big mountains with a large hole in their summit, and on Earth that generally means one thing — a volcano,” said Oliver White, New Horizons postdoctoral researcher at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California. Because it’s so cold In the outer solar system, the geology of places like Pluto is nothing like Earth’s. Pluto’s mountains are made of water ice, and its volc

Astronomers spot most distant object in the solar system, could point to other rogue planets

NATIONAL HARBOR, MARYLAND—Astronomers have found the most distant object ever in our solar system, three times farther away than Pluto. The dwarf planet, which has been designated V774104, is between 500 and 1000 kilometers across. It will take another year before scientists pin down its orbit, but it could end up joining an emerging class of extreme solar system objects whose strange orbits point to the hypothetical influence of rogue planets or nearby stars. “We can’t explain these objects’ orbits from what we know about the solar system,” says Scott Sheppard, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., who announced the discovery here today at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. V774104 currently sits 15.4 billion kilometers from the sun, or 103 astronomical units (AU) away. One AU is the distance between Earth and the sun. The dwarf planet could eventually join one of two clubs. If its orbit one day takes it closer to our sun, it woul

TOP STORIES THE NATION BUSINESS INSIDE NIGERIA SPORT VIEWPOINT HOT CELEBS LIFE & LIVING ☰ Can the change Nigerians expect now begin?

Now that President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet ministers have been sworn in after four months of waiting, plus another month of Senate screening, and then another week of anticipation and ministerial retreat before official inauguration, can the change Nigerians yearn for now begin to be delivered? Can the betterment of our lives and country now begin to manifest please? I ask these questions because much time has been lost already. Surprisingly, however, it doesn’t appear the All Progressives Congress (APC) government fully realises that every moment counts, or that it really has no time to waste, or that Nigerians may soon run out of patience with it! Back in July, President Buhari had announced he would not appoint ministers until September, saying that such appointments “cannot and should not be rushed.” He made this known in an article he authored titled“Nigeria committed to good governance and fighting terror”, which was published by the Washington Post on Monday, July 20, 2

The prosecutor, Inspector Abba Ayuba, told the court that the accused approached the complainant and promised to help him secure a job with the organisation. The accused, a resident of Jedo Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating. Ayuba told the court that Olawale, of Federal Housing Authority, Lugbe, petitioned the FCT Commissioner of Police on August 13, complaining that the accused duped him. He said that the accused requested for N2 million as fee for the employment which the complainant paid. Ayuba told the court that the accused could not secure the employment as promised. He added that the accused denied the allegations, but admitted collecting N500,000

Activist advises new EFCC boss to make history in fight against corruption

A human rights activist, Mr Tunde Oladunjoye, on Tuesday advised the new acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to strive to make history in the fight against corruption in Nigeria. Oladunjoye, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Iseyin, Oyo State, that Mr Ibrahim Magu's appointment came at a time the country was ready to tackle corruption. "He should realise that he has a place in history and he has his name to make or mar. "That the President has chosen him at a time he wants to fight corruption regardless of political affiliations placed enormous responsibilities on his shoulders as acting chairman." Oladunjoye also advised the new EFCC boss not to be distracted by ``praise singer'', saying that Nigerians required the commission to carry out its work diligently irrespective of who was involved. Mr Onike Quadri, a civil servant, expressed the hope that the anti graft chief would bring about the

PERHAPS the greatest surprise that would have occurred in recent judicial decisions would have been for the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, to have returned a verdict different from what it delivered on Saturday, October 24, 2015. I have often heard it said, by veterans, that election litigation, whether as a petitioner or a respondent, is the toughest hurdle for anyone seeking elective office. This is because, after all the preceding investment in time and resources in electioneering, success or failure at the point of litigation determines, ultimately, whether you are in or out. Thus, no petitioner or respondent goes to sleep until the matter is finally disposed of. We’re we not so forgetful as a people and a nation, we would immediately recall and then contextualise several related incidents that took place only a few weeks ago. There were instances of witness tampering and intimidation in the Rivers Governorship Election Petition hea

who destroyed Nigeria: Looking back, moving forward

“WE too live with divided eyes; one backward and one forward. Like an anxious figure in a Hitchcock thriller, we drive forward with eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. Our present is judged on the basis of what might have been. We mourn for that road not taken, that opportunity not seized; that victory not realised…” Portraits of Extraordinary Women That describes the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Muhammadu Buhari, who rode to power on the crest of a promised change. They presented change and redemption to Nigerians and promised all-action in a few months of getting to office. Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora, as well as the international community, embraced the party due to its promises, only to be later told how such promise would be difficult to achieve, because another party had been in power before them. Today, the APC continues to look backward and blame the past while the ship of the country heads for an iceberg. No sooner had the APC

McCarthy says 9-year-old boy targeted, lured into alley and executed

Image
Nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee was targeted because of his father's gang ties, lured into a South Side alley Monday afternoon and executed, Chicago police officials said Thursday. Speaking at the edge of the Gresham alley where Tyshawn was shot multiple times, Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy called the slaying "probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime" he had seen in his 35 years in law enforcement. McCarthy said police believe Tyshawn was killed because of his father's gang ties and a recent series of shootings between rival gangs. Law enforcement sources have told the Tribune that the bloody conflict involves rival factions of two of Chicago's oldest gangs — the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones. Police believe the Terror Dome faction of the Black P Stones targeted Pierre Stokes' son because his father, a convicted felon, reputedly belongs to the Gangster Disciples' Killa Ward faction.
